Apple Vision Pro: Release date, Specs, Price, and Everything we know!

Apple Vision Pro in Bangladesh

Apple has announced its first-ever VR headset named Apple Vision Pro will go live on sale in its U.S. stores starting on February 2. If you want to buy one, you can pre-order it for $3,499 on January 19, 2024. Even though Apple is not going to the CES conference from January 9 to 12, their announcement is expected to create excitement.

The Vision Pro headset is not called a VR headset by Apple. Instead, they call it a “revolutionary spatial computer.” Apple wants users to feel connected to the real world while using it. Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, talked about the Vision Pro at WWDC in June 2023, saying it marks the beginning of a new era for computing.

Apple Vision Pro: Release Date

When Apple introduced the Vision Pro at WWDC in June 2023, they mentioned it would be available “early next year.” Surprisingly, it’s arriving in January 2024, a bit earlier than expected. The announcement, strategically made a day before CES, is designed to attract more media attention.

Initially, the Vision Pro headset will be sold only in the U.S. Other countries will have to wait, as Apple mentioned during the initial unveiling in 2023 that it would be available in other places “later next year.” According to information in July 2023 from Gurman, a reliable source, the U.K. and Canada might get the new headset shortly after the U.S. launch. However, regions like Asia and other parts of Europe may need to wait until later in the year or even until 2025.

Apple Vision Pro: Will there be a cheaper version?

There are indications that a less expensive version of the Apple Vision Pro may be in the works. While the name “Pro” in the current version suggests a more advanced model, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has suggested that a cheaper headset could be released in 2025.

Gurman’s insights, shared in a June 2023 newsletter, hint at a more affordable version with potentially lower-quality screens, possibly using an iPhone-grade chip or an older Mac chip, and featuring fewer cameras than the original Vision Pro. Additionally, he reported in October that Apple is already working on a sequel to the Vision Pro, which is expected to be more budget-friendly than the initial model. Keep an eye on official announcements and reliable sources for the latest updates on Apple’s product lineup\

Apple Vision Pro: Design

The Apple Vision Pro is Apple’s device for “spatial computing,” and even though Apple doesn’t explicitly call it a headset, that’s essentially what it is. It is worn over the head and functions as a virtual/augmented reality headset, comparable to devices like the PlayStation VR or Meta Quest.

Apple Vision Pro

In terms of design, the Vision Pro resembles a sophisticated pair of ski goggles. Its front is made of laminated glass, specifically “three-dimensionally formed,” and it is affixed to a curved aluminum alloy frame that contours around the face. Currently, the headset is only available in a silver color, complemented by matching gray Light Seals and bands.

The frame securely attaches magnetically to a Light Seal positioned on the face. Apple provides the Light Seal in various sizes and shapes to accommodate different facial structures. A snug fit with the Light Seal is crucial to block out light and ensure the proper functioning of the headset. Apple has designed the Light Seal to be flexible, allowing it to adapt to individual face shapes for a comfortable and personalized experience.

On the sides of the headset, you’ll find two audio straps housing speakers that provide support for spatial audio. These audio straps link to a 3D braided fabric Solo Knit Band, which fastens the headset to the back of the head. The band includes an adjustable dial, allowing users to tighten it for a personalized and comfortable fit. The primary braided headband is removable, enabling users to interchange it with different sizes and, potentially, diverse designs if Apple offers those in the future.

Apple designed the rib structure of the headband to offer cushioning, breathability, and flexibility, ensuring prolonged comfort during wear.

The Vision Pro includes two types of bands for user preference. The Solo Knit Band wraps around the back of the head, while the Dual Loop Band goes around the back of the head and over the top for better weight distribution. Users can select the band that suits them best. The Dual Loop Band features a two-strap design and is not crafted from the same braided material as the Solo Knit Band. This variety allows users to tailor their experience based on comfort and fit preferences.

The Vision Pro comes with physical controls, including a Digital Crown at the top. This crown allows you to adjust your level of “immersion” and control the visibility of your real-world surroundings through “Environments.” Additionally, there is a top button that functions as a camera button, enabling you to capture 3D “spatial” videos and photos with ease. These controls provide a hands-on way to interact with and customize your experience with the headset.

Located on the left side of the headset, there is a designated space to connect a braided cable that supplies power to the device. The round charging puck resembles the one used for the Apple Watch but securely clicks into the headset with a rotational gesture.

The charging cable can be connected to either an external battery pack worn at the waist or a power adapter that is plugged into the wall. This design allows for flexibility in how the device is powered, offering users options for convenience and mobility.

Apple Vision Pro: Prescription eyewear

For those who wear glasses, Apple offers custom optical inserts to correct their vision. These ZEISS Optical Inserts are available for purchase separately and magnetically attach to the lenses of the headset. It’s important to note that these additional lenses are not included in the price of the headset, so there is an extra cost associated with them.

When Macworld’s Roman Loyola tested the Vision Pro at Apple Park, an optometrist measured his prescription, and Apple equipped the headset with the appropriate lenses. Upon putting on the headset, Loyola was able to see, but he noticed some fuzziness with text, speculating that the prescription might not have been exact.

Apple clarified to Loyola that when ordering the Vision Pro, customers will need to submit a prescription from their optometrist. The process for submitting a prescription when purchasing from an Apple Store is not clear, but it’s possible that customers may need to provide their prescription at the retail store.

As mentioned in the pricing section above, the cost of these lenses is specified by Apple. Customers will be required to pay $99 for Zeiss Optical Inserts (readers) and $149 for ZEISS Optical Inserts (prescription).

Apple Vision Pro: Compatibility

As of the information available, Apple has not provided details about the specific compatibility requirements for the Vision Pro, including whether it will require a particular generation of iPhone. However, it’s reasonable to assume that the headset may not be supported by every iPhone model. To obtain the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding compatibility, it’s recommended to check Apple’s official announcements or product documentation closer to the release date or through their customer support channels.

Apple Vision Pro: Specs and features

The Vision Pro boasts powerful performance, driven by both an M2 processor and a new R1 chip. The R1 chip processes input from 12 cameras, five sensors, and six microphones, ensuring minimal lag and avoiding latency issues. Apple claims the headset can update images at a remarkable rate, eight times faster than the blink of an eye, and it operates virtually silently.

Featuring two ultra-high-resolution displays with a total of 23 million pixels, the Vision Pro delivers a 4K display for each eye, creating an immersive experience equivalent to a display that appears 100 feet wide. Video can be rendered at 4K resolution, and text remains sharp from any viewing angle.

The audio experience is enhanced with two individually amplified drivers in each audio pod, providing Personalized Spatial Audio tailored to the user’s head and ear geometry. The sound is spatially accurate, making it feel like it emanates from the surrounding space. The Vision Pro also adapts the sound to the environment using audio ray tracing and includes an advanced sensor array.

Inside the lenses, a high-performance eye-tracking system, utilizing cameras and LEDs, projects invisible light patterns onto the user’s eyes. This enables the headset to determine the user’s gaze, utilizing high-performance eye tracking to control the interface. External accessories are minimal, primarily limited to controllers for gaming.

The Vision Pro introduces a new authentication method called Optic ID, recognizing the user’s iris for unlocking the device and authenticating passwords and purchases. All data is securely stored on a dedicated Secure Enclave processor, aligning with Apple’s privacy standards.

A notable feature, EyeSight, projects the correct perspective of the user’s eyes to onlookers. This feature includes a visual indicator, making it evident to others when the user is capturing spatial photos or videos, promoting transparency in usage.

Apple Vision Pro: Battery life

According to Apple, the external battery pack for the Vision Pro offers up to two hours of usage on a single charge. Additionally, users have the option to use the headset while it is plugged in, providing continuous power during extended periods of use. This feature offers flexibility in managing the device’s power consumption based on individual preferences and needs.

Apple Vision Pro: Software and apps

The Vision Pro headset offers a versatile range of activities for users, including watching movies, listening to music, browsing photos, examining 3D objects, and collaborating on presentations.

Users will engage with a three-dimensional interface and input system, using their eyes, hands, and voice for control. Interacting with apps can be done by looking at them, tapping fingers for selection, or flicking the wrist for scrolling. The device supports a virtual keyboard, dictation for typing, and Siri for device control.

Running on visionOS, an operating system specially designed for visual computing by Apple, the Vision Pro provides a unique user experience. Apple has made the visionOS software development kit available to members of the Apple Developer Program, and developer labs in various locations provide hands-on experience and support.

The App Store for the Vision Pro allows users to download familiar iPhone and iPad apps, as well as new apps tailored for the Vision Pro. The platform will feature a variety of apps at launch, including Microsoft Office Apps, third-party video conferencing apps, Adobe Lightroom, and a SkyGuide app for exploring space. The vision OS leverages existing developer frameworks, making over 1 million familiar apps from iOS and iPadOS compatible with the Vision Pro.

Users can view apps side by side for multitasking, enhancing productivity on the platform. Apple claims that the Vision Pro introduces new possibilities for gaming, supporting over 100 Apple Arcade games on a large screen with compatibility for popular game controllers.

At launch, users can expect to find well-known Apple apps like Safari, Messages, and FaceTime, offering a familiar and seamless experience on the Vision Pro platform.

Video Conferencing

FaceTime will be available for the Vision Pro, offering an immersive experience by utilizing the space around you. During a FaceTime call, participants will be displayed in life-size tiles, allowing you to see everyone you are talking to. Spatial Audio will enhance the realism by making each participant’s voice seem to come from the direction of their respective tile.

To address the challenge of wearing a mask and not having a camera directly in front of you, Apple has introduced a unique solution known as ‘Persona.’ This digital representation is crafted using advanced machine-learning techniques, creating a virtual version of the user. The Persona is based on your appearance and can mirror face and hand movements in real-time, offering an innovative way to convey expressions and gestures during FaceTime calls.

TV and movies

Entertainment takes center stage in the WWDC presentation, showcasing an immersive experience for movies and TV shows on the Vision Pro. The new Cinema Environment ensures that users can watch shows and movies at the intended frame rate and aspect ratio, accompanied by immersive Spatial Audio. This creates a cinematic experience on what feels like a 100-feet screen. The Vision Pro supports 3D movies, including titles like Avatar: Way of the Water.

Within the Apple TV app, Vision Pro users will have access to over 150 3D titles. Disney CEO Bob Iger expressed his excitement about this technology, showcasing movies, TV shows, and sports on the Vision Pro that elevate entertainment experiences to new heights. This includes special movie presentations, court-side views, and interactive experiences. Disney content is confirmed to be available on the Vision Pro from day one.

The Vision Pro is compatible with streaming services like Apple TV+, Disney+, Max, and others, offering a wide range of content on a screen that feels like 100 feet wide. It supports HDR content for a vibrant and dynamic viewing experience.

Apple Immersive Video is introduced with the Vision Pro, providing users with a 180-degree, three-dimensional 8K recording experience captured with Spatial Audio, placing them right in the midst of the action.

In a September 2023 update, the AirPods Pro gained support for lossless audio when used with an Apple Vision Pro headset, enhancing the audio experience for users.

Photos and videos

The Vision Pro promises an exceptionally high resolution, delivering more pixels to each eye than a 4K TV, making it an ideal choice for an immersive viewing experience of TV shows and movies.

Beyond traditional media consumption, the Vision Pro allows users to capture spatial photos and spatial videos in 3D. These moments can be relived with immersive Spatial Audio, enhancing the memories. Additionally, users can view their regular 2D photos and videos, such as Panorama photos taken on an iPhone, which will expand and wrap around the user for a unique viewing experience.

In iOS 17.2, a new Camera settings option allows users to record spatial vision specifically for the Vision Pro. This means users can capture spatial videos on their iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max and then enjoy playing them back on the Vision Pro.

Moreover, users can view their photos, including panoramas, and videos at life-size, adding an extra layer of realism to the viewing experience on the Vision Pro.

Gaming

The Vision Pro will offer a wide range of gaming possibilities, allowing users to play any games available on the App Store, including the 250 titles on Apple Arcade. This encompasses popular games like Sonic Dream Team. In addition to existing titles, new spatial games will be introduced, including titles like Game Room, What the Golf?, and Super Fruit Ninja.

To enhance the gaming experience, Apple has confirmed that the Vision Pro will support “popular game controllers.” This feature provides flexibility for users to choose their preferred gaming setup for an immersive and enjoyable gaming experience on the Vision Pro platform.

Apple Vision Pro experience: What is it like to use Vision Pro

Roman Loyola from Macworld had the opportunity to spend an hour wearing an early beta version of the Apple Vision Pro. He described the experience as “emotional, immersive, and completely captivating.” It’s important to note that the device he tried was in its early beta stage, so there may be changes to the hardware or software before its official release.

During the keynote presentation, Apple highlighted that the Vision Pro’s input system is primarily controlled by a person’s eyes, hands, and voice. The device can detect where the user is looking, allowing them to browse through apps by looking at them, tap fingers for selection, flick the wrist for scrolling, or use voice commands for dictation. Loyola confirmed that the control felt natural, and eye tracking was accurate without causing strain on the eyes.

When wearing the Vision Pro, users initially see their surroundings. Apps can be freely moved and expanded into the space around the user. Apple emphasizes that users can control the level of immersion with a twist of the Digital Crown.

Loyola described being placed in the middle of a recorded memory that triggered his own emotions and memories. He mentioned that the immersive video gave him “thrills,” and he even had the opportunity to interact with a realistic-looking dinosaur in one demo.

While wearing the headset, Loyola noted that the Vision Pro is visible but does not interfere with the sense of immersion. The two displays set in front of each eye impressed Loyola with their fantastic resolution and color, making things look realistic.

Concerning fit, Loyola, who considers his head to be large, mentioned that he had to tighten the straps for a proper fit. The headset includes a Velcro strap across the top of the head, not shown in Apple’s product photos or videos. There is also a Light Seal that fits across the forehead, available in various shapes and sizes for a perfect fit.

After an hour of wearing the Vision Pro, Loyola reported no fatigue in his neck or tenderness where the headset and straps hugged his head. Apple’s design goal to ensure users are “Never isolated from the people around you” was achieved through features like EyeSight, displaying the user’s eyes when someone is near, and seamlessly integrates with the environment.

One notable feature Loyola wasn’t able to test was the ability to wirelessly bring a Mac screen into the Apple Vision Pro by simply looking at it. The device’s advanced Spatial Audio system, creating a lifelike audio experience, and seamless compatibility with familiar Bluetooth accessories were also highlighted by Apple.
